SHANGHAI,Nov.14(Xinhua)--AteamofChinesescientistshasconfirmedthefirstlivebirthofamonkeythatcontainsahighproportionofcellsderivedfromamonkeystemcellline,whichpavesthewayforscientiststousechimericprimatestostudyhumandiseases.Theexperimentdemonstratedthatthemonkeystemcells,atypeofcellabletodevelopintomanydifferentcelltypes,couldefficientlycontributetoplacentaltissuesoutsidetheembryoandgermcells.TheresearchteamfromtheCenterforExcellenceinBrainScienceandIntelligenceTechnologyandtheGuangzhouInstitutesofBiomedicineandHealthundertheChineseAcademyofSciences(CAS),bredthechimericmonkeysusingcrab-eatingorlong-tailedmacaques.Theyfirstestablishedninestemcelllinesusingcellsremovedfromseven-day-oldblastocystembryos,andthenplacedthecelllinesinculturetogivethemenhancedabilitytodifferentiateintodifferentcelltypes.Thestemcellswerelabeledwithfluorescentproteintoenableresearcherstodeterminewhichtissueshadgrownoutofthesestemcellsinanyanimalsthatdevelopedandsurvived,accordingtothestudypublishedrecentlyasacoverstoryinthejournalCell.Finally,theteamselectedsomestemcellstoinjectintoearlymonkeyembryosthatwerefourtofivedaysoldandimplantedthemintosurrogatefemalemacaques,whichresultedinfourabortedfetusesandsixfull-termliveoffspring.Inthelivemonkeys,thecontributionofthestemcellsinthedifferenttissuetypesaveraged67percentacrossthe26differentkindsoftissuethatweretested.Also,alivechimericmonkeyshowedhighstemcellcontributionsreachingupto90percentinsometissues,thestudyrevealed.Suchachimerawithcellsfromtwoembryoshadpreviouslybeendemonstratedinratsandmice,buthadnotbeenrealizedinotherspecies,includingnon-humanprimates,untilnow.Thisnewresearchhaspracticalimplicationsforgeneticengineeringandspeciesconservation,andmayhelpscientiststogeneratemoreprecisemonkeymodelsforstudyingneurologicaldiseases,saidLiuZhen,aCASresearcherandthepaper'scorrespondingauthor.Editor:DisclaimerTheviewsandopinionsexpressedinthisarticlearethoseoftheauthor's,GMW.cnmakesnorepresentationsastoaccuracy,suitability,orvalidityofanyinformationonthissiteandwillnotbeliableforanyerrors,omissions,ordelaysinthisinformation.
